Personal information

Wouter Stam is Professor of Entrepreneurship at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of VU Amsterdam. Professor Stam holds a Master in International Business Studies, specializing in finance, from Maastricht University and received his PhD (with cum laude distinction) from VU Amsterdam, Faculty of Social Sciences, with a thesis examining the impact of social capital on the performance of entrepreneurial firms. During 2009-2015, he was a faculty member at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) where he taught courses in the undergraduate, MBA, and PhD programs and received a prestigious GRF research grant from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (2006-2007), and RSM Erasmus University (2014).

Research

His research examines the management challenges surrounding the creation and growth of entrepreneurial ventures, with a special emphasis on the strategic dilemmas faced by innovative entrepreneurs who operate in emerging industries. He is currently leading several research projects that consider how social capital and inequality influence entrepreneurial activity and performance. His other work focuses on the contextual underpinnings of entrepreneurial decision-making, with projects examining how networks shape the cognitive biases of entrepreneurs in areas such as risk-taking, planning, and time management.

Wouter Stam has received several research and teaching awards, including the Karen Legge Prize from the Journal of Management Studies, the Emerald Citations of Excellence Award, and Outstanding Reviewer Awards from Academy of Management Journal and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. His research has been published in top tier academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, and Research Policy. He currently serves as editor for Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, a leading journal in the field of entrepreneurship research that is listed in the Financial Times’ Journal List, and is a member of the editorial boards of several top tier journals, including the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Management Studies.

Teaching

Professor Stam currently teaches courses on new venture creation and corporate entrepreneurship in SBE's undergraduate and master programs as well as the joint Master in Entrepreneurship, which is offered in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam. He also contributes to the Amsterdam Business Research Institute’s (ABRI) full-time and part-time PhD programs and the executive programs of the VU School of Management.
