Personal information

Vere van Koppen is Associate Professor of Criminology at the Criminal Law and Criminology department, Faculty of Law. She is Programme Director of the BSc in Criminology.

Vere completed her Bachelor in Psychology at Leiden University, after which she did a Masters in Methods and Statistics (cum laude) at the same university. She obtained her PhD at the NSCR and Research and Documentation Center of the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice.

Research

Vere van Koppen conducts research within the field of life-course criminology. Recently, she finalized multiple studies into incidences and offenders of and responses to (sexual) child abuse and domestic violence. Earlier, she conducted research into the life-course and involvement mechanisms of organized crime offenders. In 2013, she obtained her PhD and received the PhD Award from the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime for her PhD thesis Pathways into organized crime: Criminal opportunities and adult-onset offending. In 2014, she was awarded a VENI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research for her research on the criminal careers and correlates of adult-onset offending.

Education

Vere teaches different courses in the Criminology and in the Law in Society programs. In 2019, she developed two new courses for the Law in Society program. She currently teaches Quantitative methods in criminology in the BSc (Kwantitatieve methoden en technieken in de criminology, BSc in Criminology) and Methology of empirical research (BSc Law in Society).
