Veerle is a PhD candidate in the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her work is part of the Future FRM tech project, focusing on new technical and nature-based solutions for flood risk management. In her work, she tries to improve current flood models by incorporating feedbacks between the hydrological system and society.
She obtained her bachelor’s degree Earth Science and Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and continued there with the master Hydrology. During her master thesis, she studied the interactions between floods and droughts for the agricultural sector and modelled how these interactions affect yield losses under several climate change scenarios.
