Wildfires have been a consistent feature of a several types of landscape, and are a significant factor in global climate change, both from a greenhouse gas and land use standpoint. Savanna landscapes are the most frequently burned worldwide, and contribute a large portion of the emissions attributable to wildfire. For my research, I am looking into ways of better quantifying the impact savanna fires have on these emissions using drones and remote sensing techniques. Recent field campaigns have allowed me to undertake research in a number of locations in Southern Africa. My aim is to quantify the variability in emissions within savanna regions, understand what underlying factors affect this variability, and scale this up for integration in regional and global emission models.
