Personal information

I am a associate professor in the department of Spatial Economics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I am an econometrician by training and my focus is mostly on empirical spatial (both regional and urban) economics with some applications in the transportation field. I did both my Master (econometrics) and PhD (spatial economics) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Research

My research covers different facets of spatial (or even geographical) economics, where I am interested in the socio-economic behaviour of mostly individuals with respect to the environment they live in. My recent research focuses on the (spatial) interaction between economic agents, such as with migration, tourism, commuting and trade. As such, my research is mostly empirical in nature and uses mainly observational data. Amongst others, I have publised on social interaction of criminals, tourism flows within Europe, spatial dependence within European regional growth, meta-analysis of agglomeration externalities, substitution between telework and commuting, location behaviour of migrants, and heterogeneous preferences of location behaviour. At the moment, I am very much interested in reproducability issues (meta-analyses), estimating equilibrium effects instead of marginal effects, Bayesian multilevel models and using gravity type of models for defining market areas.
