Personal information

Prof. dr. mr Steven ten Have is a full-professor of Strategy and Change at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2014-presents. He is the head of the part-time MSc.-program Change Management (Executive Education).

After completing his master degrees in law and psychology at Utrecht University and his master degree in business administration at Nyenrode Business University, Steven obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Twente. The subject of his thesis was strategic change in large international companies such as ST Microelectronics and Nokia.

Steven is an experienced change management practitioner and management consultant, as a partner at TEN HAVE Change Management (2014-present) and consultant at Berenschot (2003-2013), where he was also member (director) and vice-chairman of the Executive Board and chairman of the works council.

Steven is vice-chairman of the supervisory board of the St. Antonius Hospital and council deputy at the Enterprise Division (Ondernemingskamer). Steven was co-founder and during ten years the chairman of the Foundation for Evidence Based Management (www.cebma.org). Now, together with prof. dr. Denise Rousseau (chair) he forms the board of cebma.

Previously, Steven was the chairman of the supervisory board at Cito, member of the board of INK (Dutch Institute for Quality Management), chairman of the supervisory board at SIG, chairman of the supervisory board of Ajax N.V., and member and vice-chairman of the supervisory board at ABN AMRO. He was also visiting professor at Nyenrode Business University and crown-appointed member and member of the board of the Education Council.

Research

His research focuses on change management, behavioural change, evidence-based (change) management, and strategic change. His work has been published in several peer reviewed journals, e.g. The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, PLoS ONE, International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Academy of Management Proceedings.

Steven published nineteen books and tens of articles on change, leadership, strategy, governance, management and organization.He was also the initiator and research leader of three projects focusing on change management practice, evidence based change management practices and an evidence based assessment of social psychology and change management. These resulted in three books he published as first author in the ‘Routledge Studies in Organizational Change & Development’: Change competence. Implementing Effective Change, Reconsidering Change Management. Applying Evidence-Based Insights in Change Management Practice, and The Social Psychology of Change Management. Theories and an Evidence-Based Perspective on Social and Organizational Beings. His PhD-project was based on international research project of the European Commission (Directorate-General III Industry) focusing on 14 countries and 35 cases under which ST Micro-electronics, Bosch, Sollac, Royal Mail, Nokia and Volvo. Steven was the research leader of a team of professors and other researchers of the universiteit and business schools involved. He was the co-author of the resulting book: The European Way to Excellence. How 35 European manufacturing, public and service organizations make use of quality management. He received the McGregor Award (of The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science for Effects of Change Management Interventions. What Kind of Evidence Do We Really Have. He also received the Dutch publication prize (2007) for the best professional publication for an article on programmatic change.

Currently, he is working on a second PhD-project in the field of corporate governance, corporate law and discourse analysis. As a supervisor he finalized seven PhD-projects and at this moment supervises five candidates.
