Personal information

Saba Hamzah سبأ حمزة is a poet-scholar, author, and educator. She was born in Yemen and moved to the Netherlands with her children in 2018. In 2020, she earned a master's degree in Gender Studies from Utrecht University. From 2021 to 2023, she held the position of Research Associate at The Wereldmuseum in Amsterdam. In 2023, she was a fellow scholar at Vassar College, New York. Additionally, she was selected for the prestigious International Writing Program Fellowship at the University of Iowa.

Research

Saba Hamzah's research delves into the intersections of knowledge production, memory, social justice, and transitional justice through a decolonial lens. Her work critically examines the power structures embedded in society, using art and literary interventions as tools for education, social mediation, and transformative change. With a strong foundation in art, history, and gender studies, Saba approaches knowledge production and justice with a focus on curating and preserving the narratives of marginalized communities. She founded the Yemeni Women Archive, a space for knowledges emerging from women’s experiences and histories in Yemen and the diaspora.. Saba's writings have been published in multiple languages and are housed in prestigious international libraries, including the Library of Congress and Harvard University.

Teaching


Saba is deeply committed to education, with extensive experience teaching in diverse settings. She has taught courses and workshops on gender studies, social justice, and alternative pedagogies, always aiming to create transformative learning experiences that challenge conventional norms and stimulate critical thinking.  She has been actively involved in curriculum development, collaborating with institutions to design and implement programs that reflect her interdisciplinary approach. Beyond traditional classrooms, Saba engages with communities through public lectures, seminars, and creative projects that advocate for social justice and decolonization.
