Rieneke Stelma-Roorda is a family law scholar and an expert in elder law. She is an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and serves as the project manager of the NWA-ORC STRIDE Project Towards a new balance in empowerment and protection of the elderly. Rieneke is a member and secretary of Family Law in Europe: Academic Network (FL-EUR), a fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI) and a member of the International Advisory Board of the International Guardianship Network. In the academic year 2026-2026, she holds one of the rotating chairs of the Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht at the universities of Hasselt and Antwerp (Belgium).
Rieneke holds degrees in Law (LLM, 2015) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Children’s Rights (MSc, 2016) from Queen’s University Belfast and Legal Research (LLM, 2017) from the University of Groningen. In January 2024, she was awarded her PhD degree cum laude. Her PhD research focused on the Dutch 'levenstestament', an instrument enabling adults to make provisions for a future period of incapacity. Through a multidisciplinary study combining legal-normative, empirical and comparative research, the project explored how the levenstestament can be positioned within the changing national and international landscape on the empowerment and protection of adults with impaired decision-making capacity.

Rieneke Stelma-Roorda is familierechtjurist en expert op het gebied van het ouderenrecht. Zij werkt als universitair docent aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en is projectmanager van het NWA-ORC STRIDE-project Towards a new balance in empowerment and protection of the elderly. Rieneke is lid en secretaris van Family Law in Europe: Academic Network (FL-EUR), fellow van het European Law Institute (ELI) en lid van de International Advisory Board van het International Guardianship Network. In het academisch jaar 2025–2026 bekleedt zij een van de wisselleerstoelen van het Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht aan de universiteiten van Hasselt en Antwerpen (België).
Rieneke behaalde een master in Rechtsgeleerdheid (LLM, 2015) aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Children’s Rights (MSc, 2016) aan Queen’s University Belfast en Legal Research (LLM, 2017) aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In januari 2024 promoveerde zij cum laude op een multidisiciplinair promotieonderzoek naar het Nederlandse levenstestament.
