prof. dr. ir. Remco Kort

Full Professor, Faculty of Science, Systems Biology

Full Professor, AIMMS

Personal information

Remco Kort is Professor of Host-Microbe Interactions at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (A-LIFE) and holds the ARTIS-Micropia chair, linking academic microbiome research with public science education at the world's first museum of microbes.

His research focuses on the human microbiome and health. In the gut, this includes the gut-brain axis, early-life microbiota, dietary fibre, and the cultivation of beneficial and "lost" gut microbes. He also studies the vaginal microbiome, with a focus on the genomics and functional traits of Lactobacillus crispatus and its role in women's health. He often uses citizen science as a research method.

Remco co-founded Yoba for Life, a social enterprise that brings probiotic fermented foods to communities in sub-Saharan Africa. He leads and takes part in national and international research consortia and is an active science communicator in Dutch media and arts-science projects. In 2025 he received the ISAPP Sanders Award for advancement of the biotic sciences.
