Pieter van Beukering is a Dutch economist with more than 20 years of experience in research and teaching in environmental economics. In 1993 he started as an economic research associate at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In March 2001, he successfully defended his PhD dissertation on the economics of trade, recycling and the environment. His main research interests are natural resource management and economic valuation focused on ecosystem services and renewable energy. Between 2003 and 2009 worked as the director of the PREM research programme, aiming at strengthening capacity in developing countries for environmental economic research. From 2009 till 2019 Pieter van Beukering worked as an Associate Professor lecturing environmental economics at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW) of VU Amsterdam. In 2015, he became the department head of the Environmental Economics Department as well as the deputy director of IVM. Between 2015 and 2022 Pieter also acted as the director of the MSc programme Environment and Resource Management (ERM). In 2019 he became professor of Economics of Natural Capital and as of 2020 he is director of IVM. Currently, Pieter is the vice-dean of the Faculty of Science.
