Pablo Negret is an Assistant Professor in Biodiversity, Land Use and Spatial Planning at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
He is an ecology and conservation scientist whose research focuses on understanding how land-use change and human pressures affect biodiversity, and on identifying effective strategies for biodiversity conservation. His work integrates landscape ecology, biogeography, and conservation science, with a particular focus on area-based conservation, including protected areas and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs).
His research spans scales from individual species and landscapes to national and global assessments. He uses spatial analysis, biodiversity data and impact-evaluation approaches to investigate biodiversity loss, deforestation and forest fragmentation, and to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation interventions. A central aim of his work is to bridge biodiversity science, land-use planning and conservation decision-making to inform more effective and equitable conservation strategies.
Pablo has conducted research across Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe, combining large-scale spatial analyses with field-based ecological research and collaborations with universities, conservation organisations, governments and local partners.
