Personal information

Dr. Menusch Khadjavi is Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Spatial Economics of the School of Business and Economics at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. He is affiliated with the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and serves as Research Fellow at the Tinbergen Institute and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He is the PPE Economics Coordinator at the John Stuart Mill College at VU Amsterdam.

His research combines insights from economics, ethics, and behavioral science to address societal challenges related to environmental sustainability, public policy, and human decision-making. Using experimental and behavioral methods, he studies how individuals and organizations respond to incentives, regulations, and social norms in real-world settings. He obtained his PhD (summa cum laude) in economics from the University of Hamburg in 2013.

Research

How can societies design policies and institutions that encourage sustainable, ethical, and socially beneficial behavior? This question lies at the heart of Menusch Khadjavi’s research.

His work investigates how people make decisions when faced with trade-offs involving economic incentives, environmental sustainability, fairness, and social responsibility. By combining behavioral economics with experimental methods, he generates evidence that can inform public policy, environmental governance, and organizational decision-making.

Current research themes include climate adaptation and resilience, behavioral responses to environmental change, ethics and moral behavior, cooperation and competition, honesty and compliance and the design of effective public policies. His research often involves field and laboratory experiments conducted in diverse settings, including agricultural communities, scientific organizations, and public-sector environments.

The findings are relevant for policymakers, international organizations, NGOs, sustainability initiatives, and industries facing environmental and societal transition challenges, including agriculture, natural resource management, climate adaptation, and public governance.
