Personal information

Marloes Jansen is a Senior Lecturer in Gender & Media at the Department of Communication Science of the VU Amsterdam. Her research focuses on issues related to gender and politics, representation of women and men in the news, and female beauty standards on social media. More specifically, she studies, among other things, politicians’ communication strategies via Twitter, gender differences in media coverage of politicians, the representation of victims of sexual violence in the news, and the effects of idealized and sexualized images on Instagram on young women. Marloes obtained her PhD in Political Communication, which was funded by the Research Excellence Academy of Newcastle University. Prior to that, she was a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Media, Communication and Organization of the University of Twente, where she also acquired her MSc degree in Communication Science (cum laude).
