Marije Schaafsma is an Associate Professor and Head of the Environmental Economics department of the IVM. She is specialised in analysing the well-being and welfare effects of ecosystem services changes, using monetary and non-monetary valuation methods, and has a keen interest in deliberative valuation and assessing environmental justice in/through valuation methods. She also works on the integration of environmental factors into poverty statistics. She strongly engages in interdisciplinary research to foster sustainable development.
Marije was a Lead Author on the IPBES values assessment and Coordinating Lead Author on the IPBES Business & Biodiversity Assessment. Marije did her PhD at VU Amsterdam, then moved to the UK (Universities of East Anglia, Cambridge, Southampton), and joined VU Amsterdam again in November 2019. She is a Research Fellow at CSERGE, University of East Anglia. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Policy.
