Personal information

John Hogan is an Assistant Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. His research focuses on the security institutions and policies of the African Union (AU), AU-EU cooperation, postcolonial approaches to international relations theory, and the role of emotions in multilateral policymaking.

Research

His research has centred on the politics and security institutions of the African Union (AU), as well as cooperation between the AU and the European Union (EU). He is currently working on a project examining how policy translates into practice in the Defence Forces of Ireland. Cutting across this work is an interest in the role of emotions and narratives in international relations.

Teaching

He currently coordinates two bachelor's courses, Global Governance, and Global Governance and International Relations, as well as a minor course, Peace and Conflict: From Theory to Practice, while also teaching on the master's course International Security Studies. In addition, John is the programme coordinator for the Minor in Peace and Conflict Studies, and supervises bachelor and master theses on subjects including international security institutions, the African Union, postcolonialism and narratives in international relations.
