Personal information

John Hogan is an Assistant Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. His research focuses on the security institutions and policies of the African Union (AU), AU-EU cooperation, postcolonial approaches to international relations theory, and the role of emotions in multilateral policymaking.

Research

His research interests revolve around the African Union, in particular its African Peace and Security Architecture, and this has recently expanded to incorporate AU-European Union security cooperation. John has also recently taken an interest in the role that emotions and emotion norms play in understanding multilateral policymaking at the AU, as well as inter-organisational policymaking between the AU and the EU.

Teaching

He currently coordinates two bachelor's courses, International Relations and Global Governance, and Global Governance and International Relations, as well as a master's course, Applying Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Political Science, while also teaching on the master's course International Security Studies. In addition, John is the programme coordinator for the Minor in Peace and Conflict Studies, and supervises bachelor and master theses on subjects including international security institutions, the African Union, postcolonialism and international relations theory.
