dr. Jens de Bruijn

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Jens is an assistant professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). As part of the COASTMOVE project, he works on the DYNAMO global agent-based model which simulates adaptation and migration decisions of the coastal population in response to sea level rise. Furthermore, he develops the large-scale agent-based model GEB, which is dynamically coupled to the hydrological model CWatM (IIASA). Both models are based on his newly developed package for computational efficient ABMs honeybees.

He also works as a research scholar at IIASA where he similarly works on large-scale agent-based modelling of farmer behaviour, as co-PI of the fairSTREAM project. Here, he also contributes to the development of CWatM.

Dr. de Bruijn holds a doctoral degree from the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VU University Amsterdam on the analysis of disaster-related social media, flood detection and disaster response. In this role, he also developed the Global Flood Monitor. Previously, he also worked as a data scientist at FloodTags and as a consultant for the World Bank to support rapid damage assessments (GRADE).
