Assistant Professor, School of Business and Economics, Management and Organisation

Personal information

Judith Langerak is an Assistant Professor in HRM and Organizational Behavior at the department of Management and Organization at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Prior to this position, Judith has worked as an assistant professor and academic consultant at the Utrecht University School of Governance and as a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam. Before starting her academic career, she has worked as a project manager at the Municipality of Utrecht, a policy worker at the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, and data analist at NCOI.

Research

Judith is interested in how workers and organizations can cope with challenges in a more proactive manner. In her doctoral research at the University of Amsterdam (department of organizational psychology), Judith focused on how workers use proactive coping – all future-oriented efforts through which people try to improve the future situation or their position in it – to prevent or mitigate their experience of job insecurity. The results showed, among other things, that the type and amount of proactive coping that workers use can help them to minimize their future experience of job insecurity.

Judith has experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including:

  • Meta-analyses
  • Multi-level path analyses
  • Online intervention studies
  • Interviews
  • Document analysis
  • Participatory observation

Her areas of expertise include:

  • Job insecurity
  • Proactive career behavior
  • Flexible work relations
  • (Proactive) Coping
Teaching

Judith teaches bachelor and master level courses regarding SHRM, organizational behaviour, the future of work, and research methods. She has experience in teaching students from different disciplinary backgrounds and values the exchange of different perspectives and experiences to construct stronger results and reflections. In addition, she supervises bachelor and master theses on topics related to proactive coping and the future of work.
