Jan Willem Sap is Professor of European Law at the Open University in the Netherlands in Heerlen and Associate Professor of European Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hij studied Law at Leiden University and has written a PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He was a member of the town council of Amsterdam South. He was an editor of Philosophia Reformata and a founding editor of the European Constitutional Law Review. In 2006 he was a member of the National Convention on constitutional reforms in the Netherlands. He published books and articles in the field of constitutional law, political theory and European Union Law. He specializes in the rule of law and democracy in the European Union, security and human rights and the relationship between church and state.
