Personal information

Jampel Dell’Angelo is Associate Professor with ius promovendi of Water Governance and Politics in the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is an environmental social scientist interested in the political economy of naturalresources, in particular water.

Since 2021 he serves as Editor-in-Chief of World Development.

Dell'Angelo is the Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the EU's Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) NEWAVE 'Next Water Governance'. The NEWAVE consortium includes 10 host organizations and 19 partners from academia, the public and private sectors and organizes the research and training of 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) enrolled in different Phd programs.

His research is on the multilevel dimensions of cooperation and conflict over freshwater resources. The focus of his research spans from socio-environmental dynamics of climate change adaption in community irrigation schemes of rural Kenya to global patterns of virtual water appropriation associated with transnational land investments. He employs mixed methods and builds on theoretical pluralism combining perspectives from the Bloomington School of Political Economy and the Barcelona School of Political Ecology. Believing in the necessity to conduct true interdisciplinary research to tackle complex water governance problems he draws on a socio-environmental synthesis approach.

Dell’Angelo is a Visiting Scholar and Member of the Ecohydrology Lab in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at University of California, Berkeley and an Environmental Governance Affiliate Scholar at the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), Maryland.

Before joining IVM he held different postdoctoral appointments, at the Environmental Sciences Department of University of Virginia, at the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), Maryland and at the Ostrom Workshop of Indiana University. As a postdoc, Dell’Angelo was the Principal Investigator on the Global Water Grab Syndrome project and the coordinator of the Kenya team in the NSF Institutional Dynamics of Adaptation to Climate Change research.

He received his dual PhD in December 2013 in Environmental Science and Technology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and in International Cooperation and Sustainable Development from Sapienza University of Rome. He holds a MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics, a MSc in Energy and Environmental Management from Sapienza University of Rome and a Graduate Certificate in International Health from Curtin University of Technology, Perth. His Bachelor’s degree is in Environmental Economics from the University of Siena in Italy.

Jampel has a passion for video making and, when possible, complements his research in the field with documentary production. He is a producer of the documentary on environmental conflicts, Aquí nos vamos a quedar and Working Together: Research and Water Governance on Mount Kenya on water governance in Kenya.

Dell'Angelo currently supervises few PhD candidates, Dona Geagea,  Paula Zuluaga, Caterina Marinetti and Paulina Raniecka, which are expected to obtain their doctoral degree at th VU Amsterdam.
