Jaap-Jan Flinterman (1955) deed in 1983 aan de Vrije Universiteit doctoraalexamen Geschiedenis (hoofdvak: Oude Geschiedenis; bijvakken: Contemporaine Geschiedenis en Grieks). In de periode 1986-1989 verrichtte hij als NWO-medewerker het onderzoek dat in 1993 uitmondde in een promotie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (titel proefschrift: zie onder 'research output'). Werkte in 1984-5 en 1990 als junior-docent aan respectievelijk de VU en de KUN. Keerde in 1990 terug naar de VU; combineerde in de jaren 1992-2000 zijn aanstelling in Amsterdam met een betrekking aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Van 2000 tot zijn pensionering in 2021 was hij voor de volledige werktijd aan de VU verbonden als universitair docent Oude Geschiedenis. Van 2017 tot 2025 was hij lid van de redactie van Lampas. Tijdschrift voor classici. In het voorjaar van 1997 was hij Visiting Scholar van Corpus Christi College (Oxford). Sprak op uitnodiging voor congressen in Lund (Greek Romans or Roman Greeks? Interaction, confrontation, and cultural responses, juni 1998), Groningen (International Conference on the Ancient Novel 2000, juli 2000), Heidelberg (ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ. Die Welt der Zweiten Sophistik, Internationales Kolloquium, maart 2003), Brussel (International Colloquium on Philostratus' Life of Apollonius, januari 2006) en Augsburg (Artemidor von Daldis und die antike Traumdeutung: Texte–Kontexte–Rezeptionen. Internationale altertumswissenschaftliche Tagung, maart 2013). Jaap-Jan Flinterman is getrouwd en vader van een zoon.

Jaap-Jan Flinterman (1955) graduated in History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1983, with Ancient History as his main subject and minors in Ancient Greek Language and Literature and Contemporary History. In 1986 he started his doctorate research at the University of Nijmegen on a contract from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). He received his PhD in 1993. In 1984-5 and 1990 he worked as a Junior Lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit and the University of Nijmegen respectively. In 1990 he returned to the Vrije Universiteit as a part-timer, during the years 1992-2000 combining his position in Amsterdam with a job at Utrecht University. Since 2000 he had a full-time tenured position as Lecturer in Ancient History at the Vrije Universiteit, from which he retired in 2021. From 2017 until 2025, he was a member of the editorial board of Lampas. Tijdschrift voor classici. During Trinity Term 1997 he held a Visiting Scholarship of Corpus Christi College (Oxford). He was an invited speaker at conferences in Lund (Greek Romans or Roman Greeks? Interaction, confrontation, and cultural responses, June 1998), Groningen (International Conference on the Ancient Novel 2000, July 2000), Heidelberg (ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ. Die Welt der Zweiten Sophistik, Internationales Kolloquium, March 2003), Brussels (International Colloquium on Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius, January 2006), and Augsburg (Artemidor von Daldis und die antike Traumdeutung. Texte–Kontexte–Rezeptionen, March 2013). Jaap-Jan Flinterman is married and has a son.

Research

Centraal in mijn onderzoek stond de Griekse wereld in de eerste eeuwen van onze jaartelling, in het bijzonder Griekse welsprekendheid en literatuur in de Keizertijd als medium voor de constructie en expressie van de mentaliteit van een elite; attitudes van verschillende categorieën Griekse intellectuelen ten opzichte van politieke macht; reacties op het optreden van charismatische wijzen-wonderdoeners; droomverklaring en andere vormen van divinatie buiten de publieke sfeer; Griekse auteurs als Aelius Aristides, Artemidorus, Lucianus en, niet in de laatste plaats, Philostratus. Maar ik ben ook geïnteresseerd in de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse communisme en in de archeologie en geschiedenis van de hellenistische Peloponnesus. Ik ben lid van de onderzoeksschool OIKOS.

The focus in my research was on the Greek world of the first centuries CE, especially Greek oratory and literature as a medium for the construction and expression of Greek élite identity under the Roman Empire; attitudes of intellectuals vis-à-vis political power; sages and miracle-workers claiming or credited with a superhuman nature; oneiromancy and other forms of private divination; Greek authors such as Aelius Aristides, Artemidorus, Lucian and, last but not least, Philostratus. But I am also interested in the history of Dutch communism and in the history and archaeology of the Hellenistic Peloponnese. I am a Member of the National Research School in Classical Studies in the Netherlands (OIKOS).
