dr. Hans de Moel

Associate Professor, Faculty of Science, Water and Climate Risk

Personal information

Dr. Hans de Moel works as an assistant professor in the field of natural hazard risk management, climate change and adaptation at the Institute for Environmental Studies, VU University, Amsterdam. He aims to look in an integrated way at the natural system with its hazards, the impacts it can have on society and how this relates to the management of these hazards.

His academic expertise are in the fields of flood risks, drought risks, hurricane risks, hail risks, water resources, hydrological modelling, land-use change, climate change (past and future), and adaptation. He has developed various risk models for countries or regions in the Netherlands, USA, Asia and Africa. He uses such physical hazard and risk models to support risk-based decision making by evaluating various adaptation measures and strategies, assessing the impact of climate change and socio-economic growth, and investigate uncertainties and sensitivities of such assessments and subsequent decisions.

He is a certified university lecturer and teaches in various water and environment related teaching programs both at BSc and MSc level. He has been the coordinator of the top-rated Hydrology MSc program for over five years, which he helped redevelop in 2014. He is also involved in capacity building projects such as for teaching staff at UY (Myanmar) and phd applicants from Africa.
