Hang Yang is a PhD candidate at the department of Environmental Geography of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hang’s research aims to gain insights on urban dynamics through the analysis of historical trajectories of human settlement development and the land use change model concentrating on the varying density within the built-up land. This will contribute to an optimised decision in urban planning by considering the trade-off between urban densification and urban sustainability. His project is funded by Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC).
Hang obtained a master’s degree of Human Geography at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), and a bachelor’s degree of Geographic Science at Wuhan University (WHU). His research mainly focused on the field of sustainable urban development, regional inequality, land use change, scenario analysis. In the previous research, Hang applied the System Dynamics model (or integrated with other models) to estimate the future carbon storage/ urban sustainability under the framework of Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) at a regional scale.
