Associate Professor, School of Business and Economics, Econometrics and Data Science

, Tinbergen Institute

Personal information

Hande Karabiyik is an associate professor at the department of Econometrics and Data Science. Before she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Economics of Lund University, Sweden. She obtained her PhD degree at the Maastricht University in January 2015.

Research

Hande Karabiyik is an econometrician whose research focuses on developing advanced statistical methods to better understand complex economic relationships. She works at the intersection of econometric theory and real-world economic applications.

A core part of her research centers on panel data econometrics, methods for analyzing data that track multiple entities (such as individuals, firms, or countries) over time. She studies issues such as unobserved heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence, aiming to improve the accuracy and reliability of estimation and inference in these models.

In addition to methodological contributions, Karabiyik applies these tools to substantive questions in economics and finance. Her work includes research on price discovery in financial markets, predictability in economic data, and corporate finance dynamics.

More recently, she has expanded her focus to climate econometrics, using quantitative models to examine how climate change and environmental factors affect economic outcomes such as migration, agriculture, and growth.

Teaching

Hande Karabiyik is programme director of the master Econometrics and Operations Research. In addition she teaches at the Vrije Universiteit:
