Personal information

Gerard Martínez Görbig is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the biodiversity and social impacts of climate actions at the Environmental Geography department of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at VU Amsterdam. He has a background in architecture and urban planning.

His research focuses on the impacts of climate action implementation, particularly large PV panel fields, across Europe. The research aims to map trade-offs, conflicts, and other potential side effects emerging from the implementation of such fields, contributing to better planning for a just energy transition. His work is framed under the JustBioSolar project and uses qualitative and quantitative methods, including geospatial analysis and statistics.

Before his postdoctoral research, he conducted his PhD at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente. There, he investigated how synergies, trade-offs, co-benefits, and conflicts can shape the implementation of climate actions in the European context, providing an in-depth spatial analysis and mapping of the different barriers, enablers, and potential feedback effects of climate actions on society across European settlements. Additionally, he has professional experience in the private sector as a construction studies technician and sustainability architect consultant.
