Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Art and Culture, History, Antiquity

Personal information

From 1977 to 2008 I taught Classics at various secondary schools. After my PhD (1986) I continued to work as an independent researcher until 2001, when I got a small job at the Vrije Universiteit. After the premature death of Simon Slings in 2004 I became his successor as professor of Greek at the Vrije Universiteit, a position which I have occupied until my retirement in September 2019.

Research

In my research I concentrate on the interpretation and textual transmission of three authors: Plato, Epictetus and Philostratus.

I did my PhD on the textual tradition of Plato's Republic (1986). The OCT edition of Plato's Republic, based on my evaluation of the tradition of the text, was published in 2003 by Simon Slings, one of the supervisors of my PhD. Slings did not live to complete his edition of the eighth tetralogy. It will be my task to prepare the critical edition of the Critias. The foundation for this work was laid by my friend Gijsbert Jonkers, whose dissertation (1989) gives a full analysis of the transmission of these two dialogues. The commercial edition of Jonkers' dissertation was published by Brill in 2017. Originally I intended to prepare a critical edition of the Timaeus as well but given the fact that an excellent critical edition of this dialogue was published in 2022 by Federico Petrucci, I have abandoned this project.

In 1999 I published a critical edition of Epictetus' Encheiridion and its three Christian adaptations. A Teubner edition of the original Encheiridion appeared in 2007. I have been continuing my studies on Epictetus until the present day and I presently prepare an article on the interpretation of fragment 1.

Since 1999, I have been engaged in the project of preparing a critical edition of Philostratus' Life of Apollonius of Tyana for the Teubner series. I have published two articles on the transmission of the text (2009 and 2014), an article on the title of the work (2015), an article on the constitution of the text (2019) and an article on the so-called codex Vratislaviensis (2020). The edition of the Vita Apollonii Tyanei was published in March 2022. The companion volume entitled Critical Notes on Philostratus' Life of Apollonius of Tyana was published in Jul 2023.

In the future I hope to embark on the project of studying the rich transmission of Philostratus' Imagines and to prepare a new critical edition of this influential text.

Education

I visited the Eerste Christelijk Lyceum in Haarlem from 1966 to 1972, where I received my gymnasium diploma. I studied Classics at the Vrije Universiteit from 1972 to 1980. I did my PhD on the textual tradition of Plato's Republic from 1982 to 1986, under the guidance of Dirk Schenkeveld and Simon Slings.

Teaching

I presently supervise PhD theses by Joachim Kraaij (transmission and edition of Plato's Euthydemus) and Caterina Fossi (on Plato's myths).
