Frank Goossens is a PhD candidate at the Department of Legal Theory and Legal History at the Faculty of Law. In 2024, he graduated with a Master of Logic (MSc) from the UvA Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law (BA). After completing his studies, Goossens began a PhD project focused on the analysis of argumentation in European Union decision-making regarding the protection of the Rule of Law.
Goossens’ PhD research seeks to improve the quality of the argumentative discourse surrounding the protection of the Rule of Law within the European Union. The debate on this subject is characterized by deep disagreements between member states, hampering effective decision-making.
This project aims to provide clarity on the philosophical concept of "deep disagreements" in the EU context. To achieve this, an analysis of the argumentation in a range of documents—such as debates, proposals, and reports— will be made using the pragma-dialectical theory framework. The analysis will be situated within the broader scholarly discourse on deliberative and agonistic democracy.
