Research Interests

I am interested in preventing and resolving conflicts that arise from difficult discussions, such as discussions concerning politics or religion.

Specifically, I research how private individuals like you and me can encourage others to understand views different from their own perspective during difficult discussions.

Encouraging others to view things from another's perspective is especially difficult online because of a lack of social connection and accountability. However, online discussions have become an important element of civic discourse and influence the extent to which we are willing to understand other's views.

My research therefore focuses on how to improve the communication in, and design of, online discussion environments to encourage perspective-taking. To do so, I draw on mechanisms from a variety of disciplines, such as communication science, human-computer interaction, psychology, and peace and conflict studies. I also draw on insights from professionals in facilitation and conflict resolution, who I interview. I use quantitative and qualitative tools of analysis.
