Personal information

Camiel Beukeboom is associate professor at the Department of Communication Science of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He studied Social Psychology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and subsequently worked as a researcher (AIO) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Here he obtained his doctorate (PhD) in Social Psychology in 2003 on the basis of his dissertation on the effects of feelings (mood) on language use. After working as a lecturer in Social Psychology he moved to Communication Science where he currently teaches in courses on Interpersonal Communication, Diversity, Introduction to Communication Science, and in supervision of various research projects (e.g., MA thesis).

His research mainly focuses on the role of language in the communication and maintenance of stereotypes and prejudice. Using both experimental methods and (automated) content analysis he aims to reveal the various ways in which social-category stereotypes are (implicitly) expressed in the use of language. In addition, he studies social media use in interpersonal communication, and the ways in which companies can successfully act in social media.
