I am currently a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I am also affiliated with the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. I hold a PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in Florence.
My research explores issues of mobility, borders, race and everyday politics. My current work focuses in particular on Yemeni transnational migration, understood as a life-making project, pursued amidst often unlivable circumstances.
Since 2019, I have been following Yemenis’ journeys to seize asylum across various geographical sites, asking what it takes to move for those who are meant to stay put. This ethnographic research, funded by the Polish National Science Centre, documents the precarity and violence Yemenis encounter along their ways, as well as the refugees’ pursuits of dignity, joy and defiance, and the emergence of transnational connections and relationships of friendship and solidarity.
My new, EU-funded research project, Making Refuge Work, explores the afterlives of these journeys, focusing on how Yemeni refugees seek to make a life and a living in the Netherlands and Germany. I examine how refugees-turned-workers are classed and racialized through processes of displacement, and how refuge, for some, becomes a pathway to further mobility.
