Personal information

Berend van der Kolk works as an associate professor at the Accounting department of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds degrees in accounting, philosophy and business administration, and obtained his PhD on management accounting in 2016 from the University of Groningen. After that, he worked at IE Business School in Madrid for five years as an assistant professor. Also, he held visiting positions at the University of Sydney and the London School of Economics.

Research

Berend is interested in performance measurement, ethics, and digitalization, and uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods to study these topics. His research is published in international peer-reviewed journals such as the European Accounting Review, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Accounting Education, The British Accounting Review, Health Care Management Review, and Management Accounting Research, and featured in outlets such as the Financial Times, Follow The Money, and The Guardian. He is an editorial board member of the European Accounting Review, the Journal of Accounting Education and Financial Accountability & Management.

Teaching

Berend teaches courses on management accounting and performance measurement, and has experience in bachelor, master, executive, and PhD programs. In addition, he supervises various master students and PhD students on topics such as performance measurement, business ethics and management control. He published teaching cases on the intersection of ethics, sustainability and digitalization, holds a senior teaching qualification, and received various teaching-related awards.
