Personal information

Prof. Alfred Slager RBA is Professor of Institutional Investments at the department of Finance at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Alfred Slager is a non-executive board member at pension fund ABP, the Dutch pension fund for the government and education sectors. He is also a member of the investment committee at pension fund Rail&OV. 

Between 2013 and 2023, he was a board member at SPH, the Occupational Pension Fund for General Practitioners, and professor of Pension Fund Management at TIAS School for Business and Society, Tilburg University. He held advisory roles in investment committees at several pension funds, such as pension funds PME, SNS REAAL, SABIC, DNB, or supervisory roles at pension fund PGB and Mars. Furthermore, between 2020 and 2022, he was a member of the IMVB Covenant Monitoring Committee, (Pension Fund Agreement on Responsible Business Conduct). Between 2013 and 2020, he was also president of the Dutch Association of Investment Analysts (VBA), later vice president, of CFA Society VBA Netherlands. Until 2013, he held various positions in the pension industry. In 2009-2010 he was Chief Investment Officer at the Stork Pension Fund, Between 2000 and 2008 he worked as advisor, project manager and investment strategist at PGGM Investments, the pension fund for the healthcare sector. Before that, he worked at Fortis Investments (KBW Wesselius) as investment manager.

Research

His research focuses on the risk management and investment management of institutional investors, such as pension funds, especially when it comes to long-term investment strategies, sustainability, designing effective investment processes and the role of board room dynamics in investment decisions.
