How can you, as a student, contribute to (your) social safety?

Last updated on 13 May 2026
In a socially safe environment, there is no room for (cyber)bullying, stalking, doxxing, discrimination, sexual harassment, intimidation, aggression and violence. But what if it happens to you—or you witness it happening to someone else? Do you let it slide? Do you look the other way? Or do you take action? And what if someone addresses you about inapproppriate behaviour—are you open to that?

Acknowledging and discussing inappropriate behaviour is essential, though not always easy. It requires a willingness to engage in uncomfortable or difficult conversations, and respect for differing views and backgrounds. For example, in cases of misunderstanding or unintended offense. That’s why it’s important that you feel free and supported to engage in open dialogue about conduct and to raise concerns when needed.

Would you like to learn more about how you, as a student, can help foster social safety at VU? And what to do if you do encounter inappropriate behaviour? Explore our tips and/or discover how to become an active bystander.

The confidential counsellors are here for you

If you’re experiencing inappropriate behaviour, it’s helpful—if possible—to address it directly with the person involved or to speak with a lecturer, or academic advisor. But sometimes that’s not an option. In those cases, you can always contact a confidential counsellor. Want to learn more about the confidential counsellors? Read more here.
