Programme committees Faculty of Science

Each programme of the Faculty of Science (BETA) has its own programme committee (OLC). An OLC is a participation body that advises on the quality of education.

Tasks Programme Committee (OLC)

From “Higher Education and Scientific Research Act (WHW)” (valid from 01-01-2020 to present), article 9.18:
1. A study programme committee is set up for each study programme or group of study programmes. The task of the committee is to advise on the promotion and guarantee of the quality of the study programme. The committee furthermore:
a. right of consent with regard to the subjects in the Teaching and Examination Regulations, as referred to in article 7.13, second paragraph, under a1, b, c, d, e, g and v  (see Appendix 1),
b. the task of annually assessing the way in which the Teaching and Examination Regulations are implemented,
c. right of advice with regard to the Teaching and Examination Regulations, as referred to in article 7.13, with the exception of subjects in respect of which the committee has the right of approval under part a (see Appendix 1),
d. the task of giving advice or making proposals to the board of the degree programme, as referred to in article 9.17, first paragraph, and the dean, on request or on its own initiative, on all matters relating to education in the relevant degree programme, and
e. the task of discussing the assessment visit report referred to in  article 5.13, fourth paragragh.

The committee sends the advice and proposals referred to under d to the Faculty Council for information.

2  Artikel 9.35, opening words and parts b, c en d, apply mutatis mutandis to an advice as referred to in the first paragraph.

3.If the committee makes a proposal as referred to in the first paragraph, part d, to the board of the study programme or the dean, the board or the dean responds to the proposal within two months of receipt.

4 Article 9.31, third to eighth paragraph, apply mutatis mutandis to the study programme committee. In consultation between the board of the study programme or the dean and the faculty council, after consultation with the study programme committee, a different manner of composition of the study programme committee than election can be laid down in the faculty regulations. It is determined annually whether it is desirable to maintain the other method of composition.

5 The study programme committee is authorized to invite the board of the study program or the dean at least twice a year to discuss the proposed policy on the basis of an agenda it has drawn up.

6 If a faculty only comprises one degree programme, the faculty regulations may stipulate that the duties and powers of the degree programme committee are exercised by the faculty council, as referred to in article 9.37.

Composition

  • Staff members: on the recommendation of the management of the departments that contribute to the study programme and after advice from the study programme director by the Faculty Board (3 years)
  • Student members: on the recommendation of the Programme Committee, in collaboration with the FSR (whereby FSR supports in recruiting candidate members but does not nominate / appoint them due to a possible conflict of interest), and after advice from the study programme director by the Faculty Board (1 year)
  • Chair: on the recommendation of the management of the departments that contribute to the study programme and after advice from the study programme director by the Faculty Board
  • New members of the study programme committee are installed no later than 30 September
  • NB: training available annually for teacher and student members
  • NB: for Joint Degrees the appointment procedure of the lead party is followed
