Can I take an online proctored exam outside of the Netherlands?
Yes, you can take your online proctored exam from countries other than the Netherlands. However, for some countries, your privacy cannot be guaranteed and/or the internet is simply too restricted to effectively prepare for, let alone make, an online exam.
Therefore, if you are located in any of these countries, you are allowed to use a VPN to make the exam (for example, EduVPN). Please note that if you make use of a VPN, this is your own responsibility and we cannot guarantee proper technical support and privacy. Our advice is to test it thoroughly beforehand by properly following the system check of ProctorExam.
If you are abroad, please check all possibilities and restrictions beforehand.
The following countries do not comply with GDPR regulations or privacy shield regulations. This means an online proctored exam will not be possible there.- China
- Southern Arab Emirates
- Russia
- Iran

May I eat and drink during the exam? Or go to the toilet?
Eating during the exam is not allowed. However, you can drink during the exam from either a glass or a clear (water) bottle.
No, you are not allowed to go to the toilet during an exam. If you leave your laptop or computer, it will be marked as violation of the examination rules by the invigilator.Note: for students with an acknowledged medical condition, the exam provisions they have had approved by the student advisor are applicable. During the invigilation of the exam, these will be taken into account.
-
Do I get extra time for my exam because the setup procedures for online proctoring in TestVision take time?
When you are following the ProctorExam setup, your exam has not been started yet. Your exam time will start from the moment you actively start your exam. This will be visible within TestVision. You will receive the same amount of time for your actual exam.
You will be granted maximum 15 minutes to follow the setup. But this usually takes less than 3 minutes.

What behaviour is regarded as fraudulent during an online proctored exam?
Please read our website on academic integrity thoroughly. This provides general information on fraud, tips on how to avoid fraudulent behaviour and links to additional informative websites.
Specific information for online proctoring
Please read this document regarding the guidelines on (suspicion of) fraudulent behaviour and violation of examination rules during an online proctored exam on the right-hand side in Dutch and English.
For students who have medical conditions or disabilities, the regular procedures still apply: if you are normally allowed certain materials or procedures during on-campus exams, then you are also allowed to have these procedures and materials during online (proctored) exams. For questions about these procedures, you should contact your study advisor.
-
What happens when fraudulent behaviour is suspected?
When suspicious behaviour is identified, a report (based on the recorded data) is handed over to the teacher and the Examination Board, who then decide on whether any further action will be taken. If the Examination Board decides that fraudulent behaviour has occurred, then they will contact you and give you an opportunity to respond (hoor-wederhoor).
In the event that this happens, you are allowed to inspect your recordings and data at the VU Amsterdam campus. You can request to inspect the recordings at your Examination Board. The procedure is the same as that for campus-based exams.
I have witnessed fraudulent behaviour, what should I do?
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam finds it important to ensure that any misconduct or wrongdoings within the organization can be reported safely. The Whistleblowers’ Regulations have been drawn up for that purpose.
-
What do I do if I have received an email from the Examination Board warning me about my behaviour?
When your behaviour has been flagged, the Examination Board will typically send you an email about 'non-regulated behaviour' or not following the exam rules.
If you receive a warning, please ensure that you:
- Stay calm.
- Read the message you have been sent in its entirety.
- Understand what behaviour has been flagged and why you received the email.
- Ensure that you read and understand the examination rules.
- Check if there are direct consequences for the non-regulated behaviour. If there are, then take the appropriate action and contact your study advisor
-
Is it possible to review my exam recordings?
If the Examination Board has warned you about certain behaviour, you can ask them to request a reviewing session for you. Your Faculty will organize a reviewing session with and for you.
