Additional exam opportunity

Apply for extra exam opportunity
Last updated on 28 November 2022
In exceptional circumstances, students are granted additional examination opportunities. Students must submit their request to the Examination Board.

If you need to pass just one component for your Bachelor's degree, the examination board may offer an extra examination opportunity. This is only given to students who would otherwise suffer a significant study delay. In that case, you must have used all previous examination opportunities for your course. Make sure to carefully read the instructions below before filling your request.

You can submit a request using this form.
Please note: are you studying medicine? Then use this form

Additional exam requests per faculty

The terms and conditions for requesting an additional exam may differ per faculty.

  • ACTA

Students of the Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) can find more information on ACTA.nl [in Dutch].

  • BETA

Apply for an extra examination opportunity for the last course as described below.

    Date of extra examination opportunity

The extra examination opportunity will take place on Tuesday 20 August 2024 at VU, unless the lecturer in consultation with the Examination Board decides otherwise. This way, you can still graduate this academic year.

    Conditions

    1. You can submit a request for an extra examination opportunity if the course in question is the last course to be passed* from your Bachelor's, Premaster's or Master's programme at the VU. The Bachelor's or Master's thesis must also have been completed. Practicals are excluded from this arrangement.

If the course is still taught in the upcoming educational periods, you will first take the regular examination and/or re-examination.

    2. The deadline for submitting a request to the examination board for an extra examination opportunity for the last course to be taken is 15 July 2024. Requests made after this date will no longer be considered!

N.B. (Personal) circumstances and not obtaining a positive BSA** are no reason to be granted an extra examination opportunity.

    Course from another faculty

About extra examination opportunities of courses from another faculty, the BETA examination board cannot make any statements. This depends on the rules of the faculty in question. You should submit the request to the faculty to which the course belongs.

For example, did you take a course at another faculty in your elective period and is that the last course you need to pass for your Bachelor's or Master's programme? In that case, the conditions of the other faculty apply and you should address your request to the examination board of this other faculty.

    * Not yet received all your study results before 15 July? Then the application deadline of 15 July 2024 also applies. Between 1-15 July, it is possible to apply for conditional registration for the extra examination opportunity if:
    1. you expect your thesis mark between 15 July and 31 August 2024 and you have passed all courses except the one for which you want to request this extra examination opportunity. With your application, you should declare that you will complete your thesis before 31 August.

    2. not all your remaining grades will be registered by 15 July due to a regular resit of a course from period 4, 5 and/or 6. Then you must enclose with your request proof of which course + course code you still expect to receive a mark. (For example by means of a screenshot of the examination schedule of the course concerned).

    **BSA
First-year students are not entitled for an extra examination opportunity. They can request postponement of the Binding Study Advice if they have missed several exams due to special circumstances. You should then contact the academic advisor of your programme before 1 June of the academic year in question.

  • FBMS

Policy of the Examination Board FBMS regarding students’ requests for extra examination opportunities

    FBMS – 2023-2024
There are two regular examination opportunities per course per year. If a student misses one of these opportunities, this does not automatically entitle them to an extra examination opportunity: additional examination opportunities are only granted if a number of conditions are met.

    Conditions for extra examination opportunities:

    • The concerning examination* is the last examination you need to pass in order to graduate and
    • You have completed your final works (such as thesis, BOP, master's internship) and
    • You have taken both regular examination opportunities for this examination in the current academic year, unless this was not possible due to compelling reasons, as referred to in the TER, article 3.5 section 4, and
    • Not granting the extra examination opportunity would result in an "unreasonable" study delay.

This regulation can only be used once.

To determine what counts as an "unreasonable" study delay, the Examination Board distinguishes between bachelor’s and (research) master’s programmes.

    Bachelor
For bachelor’s students, only third- or upper-year students at the end of their studies can submit a request if the next regular examination opportunity for the last course of study takes place in the following academic year; first- and second-year bachelor’s students will not be given an extra examination opportunity but will be referred to the course and its corresponding examination opportunities in the following academic year.

Bachelor’s students can submit a request for an extra examination opportunity to the Examination Board via the request form “additional exam opportunity” on vu.nl no later than 1 July**. If granted, the extra examination opportunity will take place in the week before last of August. The method of examination may differ from the method of examination as specified in the study guide.

    Master
For (research) master’s students, a request can only be submitted if, at the end of their studies, the last uncompleted course is a course from period 3 or a later period. No additional opportunities are offered for courses taught in period 1 or 2.

(Research) master’s students can, contrary to paragraph 3.5.4 paragraph b of Master TER, submit a request for an extra examination opportunity to the Examination Board via the request form “additional exam opportunity” on vu.nl no later than 1 July. If granted, the extra examination opportunity will take place during the first or second period of that academic year. The method of examination may differ from the method of examination as specified in the study guide.

Pre-master’s students are not eligible for an extra opportunity (OER Ma PEDA article 7.4/TER Ma HMS article 7.3). If there are compelling personal circumstances, a pre-master's student should make an appointment with a student advisor as soon as possible to jointly discuss the specific situation.

*If the final examination is not part of an FBMS course, the rules of the faculty in question apply and these may differ. The student should then submit a request to the faculty to which the course belongs.

** If the last course is taught in period 5 or 6, the request must be submitted no later than 15 July. Please note: after this deadline, there are still exams and re-exams for courses taught in period 5 and 6. However, a (possibly unnecessary) request has to be submitted by then as a later deadline is not possible for the organization.

  • FSS

Testing takes place twice per year for each course (except for tutorials and practicum courses). An examination missed due to illness or other unusual circumstances will not automatically entitle the student to an extra resit session. Requests for an extra resit examination will only be granted if the missed examination would cause the student an “unfair” academic delay. The Examination Board defines an “unfair” academic delay as one that would force the student to wait over 6 months for the next regularly scheduled examination for the course concerned, and that course is also the final component for your graduation.

See the regular policy for more information on the granting of an extra examination opportunity by the FSS Examination Board.

  • LAW

    Bachelor

Do you need to pass one last component of your programme to complete your Bachelor?

You can apply for an extra exam opportunity (see Teaching and Examination Regulations article 3.5 sub 4) for your Bachelor if:

    • You participated in the regular examination offered in the designated academic years (unless this was not possible due to extenuating circumstance), and
    • The subject in question is the last course required to complete your Bachelor's programme, and
    • The subject is examined with a scheduled written exam, a paper or a take-home exam, and
    • Your next exam opportunity is untimely, leading to a significant study delay, or re-enrolment in the programme.

Courses that are examined differently, e.g. a practical skills component or a Bachelor thesis, are excluded from the extra exam regulation.

Students should apply for the extra exam opportunity, only if they have completed all other courses including their thesis. The deadline for extra exam requests is 1 July.

If you complete all courses after 1 July, you may still submit a request. However, it may not be possible your to arrange for the extra exam opportunity before the new academic year, due to the summer vacation and or high volume of requests to the Examination Board in that period. Therefore we advise you to re-enrol in your Bachelor's programme, just to be safe.

The Examination Board will do its best to process your request as soon as possible, after which you can make arrangements for your extra exam with your lecturer.

Requests that do not meet the terms and conditions for an extra exam opportunity will be rejected.

    Master

  • SBE

You can request an extra examination opportunity from the Examination Board if there are demonstrable special (personal) circumstances.

This includes long-term illness or serious family circumstances that prevented you from studying or taking an exam for a longer period of time.
A request for an extra opportunity will only be processed after participation in the planned resit. Of course, this does not apply if the missed exam was already the resit. In any case, the progress of your studies and the impossibility of taking one of the exams will play a role in the decision of the Examination Board.

Consider as well the situation where you need only one course to graduate; you have followed the education, you have participated in the last two exam opportunities and the period until the next regular exam opportunity is longer than six months, calculated from the last obtained and registered final mark in the programme.

The deadline for requesting an extra exam opportunity for a course from semester 2 is August 31. The extra exam opportunities for courses from semester 2 take place in the exam week in period 1 of the following academic year. This deadline therefore only applies if you have completed all other courses, including your thesis!

Deadline for requesting an extra exam opportunity for a course from semester 1 is May 15. The extra exam opportunities for courses from semester 1 take place in the resit week in period 6. This deadline only applies if you have completed all other courses, including your thesis!
