Policy of the FSS Examination Board in dealing with requests from students for an extra examopportunity

General policy

There are 2 exam opportunities per course per year (with the exception of courses designated as practicals). If a student misses one of these opportunities due to illness or other special circumstances, this does not automatically entitle him/her to an extra exam. An extra exam opportunity will only be granted if the student experiences an "unreasonable" study delay because of missing the exam. By "unreasonable" study delay, the Examination Board means: if the student has to wait more than 6 months for the next regular exam opportunity for that subject and also has no other educational obligations in that period.

Policy regarding Master's students

  • If a master student at the end of his/her study has not passed one course of the master after the exam/resit and this concerns a course from period 1 or 2, he/she has to retake this course in the concerning period of the new academic year.
  • If, at the end of his/her study, a Master's student has not passed one subject after the exam/resit and this concerns a subject from period 3 or a later period, he/she will be given one extra exam opportunity during the first or second period of the new academic year, under the condition, of course, that the student has passed his/her Master's thesis by August at the latest. Students may submit a request for an extra exam opportunity for this subject to the Examination Board by 15 September at the latest, using the request form Apply for extra exam opportunity

Policy regarding premaster students

In principle, premaster students are not eligible for an extra exam opportunity. Only in the case of special personal circumstances, the Examination Board may decide to give the student an extra exam opportunity at the end of the academic year (in the second half of August), which gives him/her the opportunity to complete the premaster programme. Students can submit a substantiated request for an extra exam opportunity to the Examination Board until 1 July at the latest, using the request form Apply for extra exam opportunity

Policy regarding bachelor's students

  • A first-year bachelor's student who missed the exam/resit of a course for a good reason, will not be given an extra exam opportunity, but will be referred to the course and its exam opportunities in the next academic year.
  • In principle, a second-year bachelor student is also referred to the course and associated exam opportunities in the following academic year for the same reason.
  • The following applies to third-year or higher-year bachelor students:

If a Bachelor student has not passed one FSS subject at the end of his/her studies (not being the Bachelor thesis) after the exam/resit, he/she will be given an extra exam opportunity in the week before last in August.

Application for an extra exam opportunity for an FSS bachelor course:

How do I request an extra exam opportunity?

  • You can submit a request for an extra exam opportunity to the Examination Board until 1 July at the latest by using the request form Apply for extra exam opportunity
  • Under "motivation" on the application form, please indicate for which other courses you still have to take an exam or are waiting for your results. Also mention the supervisor of your bachelor's thesis or project.
  • You do not have to sign up for this extra exam opportunity.

When will I be informed by the Examination Board about the extra exam opportunity?

  • Before 1 August, you will be informed by the Examination Board whether you can participate in the extra exam opportunity and on which day, time and location it takes place (in the week before last in August). Note: if not all the results of the regular exams/resits are known by 1 August, an extra resit will be granted under certain conditions. In that case you will already receive information about the date on which the extra resit will be taken, but the preparation is at your own risk; you can only participate if you have passed all courses but one during the regular resits. In the extreme case (if the grade for the bachelor's thesis is not known before the date of the extra resit of the last course), you will take part in the extra exam, but this will only be assessed after it is known that you have passed the bachelor's thesis.
  • The manner of examining for this extra exam opportunity may differ from that of the two regular exam opportunities.
  • The extra exam are assessed within one week after taking them and the results are registered in VUnet by the Education Office immediately afterwards (so before 31 August).

How do I apply for my Bachelor's degree?

  • When you have passed the extra resit, this result has been registered and you have passed all parts of your bachelor, you will receive an email from the Education Office about your graduation. You should use the link in this e-mail to indicate that you want to graduate as soon as possible. So make sure to check your VU-mail regularly in the weeks following the extra resit.
