Additional exam opportunity

Apply for extra exam opportunity
Last updated on 8 August 2022

If you need to pass just one component for your Bachelor's degree, the examination board may offer an extra examination opportunity. This is only given to students who would otherwise suffer a significant study delay. In that case, you must have used all previous examination opportunities for your course. Make sure to carefully read the instructions below before filling your request.

You can submit a request using this form.
Please note: are you studying medicine? Then use this form

Additional exam requests per faculty

The terms and conditions for requesting an additional exam may differ per faculty.

  • ACTA

Students of the Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) can find more information on ACTA.nl [in Dutch].

  • AUC

Students of Amsterdam University College (AUC) can find more information on AUC.nl.

  • BETA

    Please notice!

To request an extra exam opportunity for your last course, please follow the description below.

    Additional exam opportunities

Students can apply for additional exam opportunities if:

    • the subject in question is the last course before concluding your Bachelor, Master or Premaster programme.

          And

    • your next exam opportunity is untimely, leading to a significant study delay.

The Examination Board can not make any commitment to courses belonging to other faculties. This depends on the terms and conditions per faculty.

First or second-year bachelor students who want to resit exams will have to wait for the following academic year.  First-year students who missed an exam due to special circumstances can apply for postponement of the Binding Study Report (BSA). Contact your Academic  advisor before July 1st of the academic year in question, if this applies to you. The Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER) of your programme list the number of examination opportunities per subject and year.

The deadline for submitting a request to the Examination board for an additional exam opportunity is 15 July. Applications received after this date can not be processed.

Please note: exams take place at VU on August 22 2022, unless instructed otherwise.

Policy of the Examination Board in dealing with requests from students for an extra resit of an examination
    FGB – 2021-2022

Please note: for the academic year 22-23 it is possible under certain conditions to enter the Master’s programme if you did not yet fully complete your Bachelor’s or Premaster’s programme and if you are a student from an EER country. This exceptional admission regulation takes precedence over an additional exam opportunity. This means that a student who can start a master's programme in academic year 22-23 on the basis of the exceptional admission regulation (provided that the admission requirements are met), will not be granted an additional examination opportunity in the current academic year 21-22. The missing Bachelor's or Premaster's course must be completed in academic year 22-23.

Only if a student has a compelling reason to deviate from this, for example because the student will not be starting a Master's next academic year, the relevant subcommittee can make an exception and still grant an additional exam opportunity. The student must submit a motivated request to the Examination Board in this case.

Exceptional admission must be requested before August 1 via this form: Master programme

    General line:
There are two examination opportunities per subject per year (with the exception of subjects designated as practicals). If a student misses one of these opportunities due to illness or other special circumstances, this does not automatically entitle him/her to an extra examination. An extra examination opportunity will only be granted if the student experiences an 'unreasonable' study delay because of missing the examination.

    Policy regarding Master's students:
If a Master's student at the end of his/her study has not passed one subject of the Master's after the (re)examination and this concerns a subject from period 1 or 2, he/she has to retake this subject in the concerning period of the new academic year.

If a Master's student at the end of his/her study has not passed one subject in the Master's after the (re)examination and this concerns a subject from period 3 or a later period, he/she will be given one extra examination opportunity during the first or second period of the new academic year, under the condition, of course, that the student has passed his/her Master's thesis by August at the latest. Students can submit a request for an extra examination opportunity for this subject to the examination board via the request form on VUweb until 15 September at the latest.

    Policy regarding premaster students:
In principle, premaster students are not eligible for an extra examination opportunity. Only in case of special personal circumstances, the examination committee may decide to give the student an extra examination opportunity at the end of the academic year, which will allow him/her to complete the premaster programme.
Students can submit a substantiated request for an extra examination opportunity to the Examination Board via the request form on VUweb.
(PEDA-premasterstudenten: zie ook Procedure niet afronden premasterprogramma 21-22)

    Policy regarding bachelor's students:
A first-year bachelor student who has missed the (re)examination of a subject for a good reason, will not be given an extra examination opportunity, but will be referred to the subject and the corresponding examination opportunities in the next academic year. If a student misses several examinations due to special circumstances, he/she has the possibility to request a postponement of the binding study advice.

In principle, a second-year bachelor student is also referred to the course and the corresponding examination opportunities in the following academic year for the same reason.

    Third- or higher-year bachelor students:
If, at the end of their studies, a bachelor student has not passed one of the FGB subjects of the bachelor (not being the Bachelors' Thesis) after the examination or re-examination, they will be given an extra examination opportunity in the week before last in August. The application procedure for this extra examination opportunity can be found on VUweb. Students can submit a request for an extra examination opportunity to the examination board via the request form on VUweb until 1 July.

Please note: if the last course is not an FGB course, the rules of the relevant faculty apply and these may deviate. The student should submit the request to the faculty to which the course belongs.

  • FSS

Testing takes place twice per year for each course (except for tutorials and practicum courses). An examination missed due to illness or other unusual circumstances will not automatically entitle the student to an extra resit session. Requests for an extra resit examination will only be granted if the missed examination would cause the student an “unfair” academic delay. The Examination Board defines an “unfair” academic delay as one that would force the student to wait over 6 months for the next regularly scheduled examination for the course concerned, and that course is also the final component for your graduation.

See the regular policy for more information on the granting of an extra examination opportunity by the FSS Examination Board.

    Adjusted policy for Corona-related requests

If you are experiencing study delay due to Corona-related circumstances, you can read below which measures apply to you. FSW does not offer extra resits during the education-free week (2 to 6 May), because in our faculty almost all (re)exams have been converted to an online variant.

For first-year Bachelor’s students (in relation to Binding Study Advice):

If you miss an examination or resit opportunity and do not meet the requirements for the binding study advice (BSA), you can submit a request for postponement of the BSA; the BSA committee will take this circumstance into account.

    For other undergraduate students:

If you miss an examination or resit opportunity and therefore cannot meet the entrance requirements for a certain course or the requirements for an exchange abroad, you can submit a request for exemption to the Examination Board. Make sure to submit this request at least one week before the closing date of the registration period of that course via the request form of the Examination Board on VU.nl.

    For premaster's students:

Should it appear that you have passed all courses of the premaster, with the exception of one course for which you missed a (re)examination opportunity, you can submit a request to the Examination Board for an extra resit for this course in August. Make sure you submit this request before July 1 via the request form (under the blue button at the top right of this page).

    For master’s students:

    • If you are unable to meet the entry requirements for a certain course or for the master's thesis because you missed a (re)exam opportunity, please contact the Examination Board at least one week before the closing date of the registration period of that course / thesis via the request form of the Examination Board on VU.nl. The Board will then consult with the lecturer of this course or the thesis coordinator to find a possible solution.
    • Should it appear that you have passed all courses of the master at the end of this academic year, except for a course from period 1 or 2 for which you missed one (re)exam opportunity,  you can submit a request to the Examination Board for an extra resit at the end of the current academic year. Make sure you submit this request before June 1 via the request form (under the blue button at the top right of this page).

If you have any questions about the above information, please contact one of the FSW academic advisors

Special arrangement exams in period 2 academic year 2021-2022

    Dear Student,

For the exams for period 2 there is a special arrangement: any student who is not able to go to campus to take an exam will keep two opportunities to take the exam. That means that for some subjects (not all, see below) an extra exam opportunity is given. That extra opportunity is not a third chance; if an exam is offered at three different occasions, only two may be used. Should you take a third sitting, that exam will not be marked.

The result of the above could be different per subject. No later than 17 December you will receive notice on what this will mean for your exams. The following options are given:

    • The exam in December will be taken according to schedule on a physical location. Anyone who cannot come to campus will have an extra opportunity to take the exam later on. The form of the examination will be decided upon by the examinator (for some Master subjects an oral exam might be an option). You will be notified of the date of the extra exam as soon as possible (for this we are dependent on VU-broad rostering).
    • The exam will be taken online, in a way that (in accordance with the Exam Committee’s framework) does not need surveillance. For a part of the exams this has already been arranged so (particularly in Masters). Possibly, other subjects will opt for this still. If this choice is made for a subject no extra exam opportunity will be scheduled, for everyone had and has two exam opportunities without having to go to campus in December.
    • The exam is made in a hybrid manner. That means that the exam will take place on campus according to schedule; whoever cannot come, due to the Covid 19 situation, can do the exam online with surveillance via Zoom (without recording). That would take place on an individual basis and at the student’s request. Students submitting such request are consenting to surveillance automatically. Students who cannot come to campus and who do have (privacy) objections to online surveillance are not obliged to make use of the opportunity and can claim an extra opportunity to take the exam (see above).

This arrangement only goes for period 2. We cannot fully assess the situation for the exams at the end of period 3; moreover, possible new national or VU-broad rules may apply. In the course of January we will inform you if a different arrangement will also be set for period 3 and if so, what it will entail.

We trust that with this arrangement we have been able to address the greatest concerns.

    Best regards,

On behalf of the Exam Committee and the Faculty Board,

    Richard Neerhof

You can request an extra examination opportunity from the Examination Board if there are demonstrable special (personal) circumstances.

This includes long-term illness or serious family circumstances that prevented you from studying or taking an exam for a longer period of time.
This could also apply in case of a demonstrable Covid-19 infection or a mandatory quarantine. A request for an extra opportunity will only be processed after participation in the planned resit. Of course, this does not apply if the missed exam was already the resit. In any case, the progress of your studies and the impossibility of taking one of the exams will play a role in the decision of the Examination Board.

Consider as well the situation where you need only one course to graduate; you have followed the education, you have participated in the last two exam opportunities and the period until the next regular exam opportunity is longer than six months, calculated from the last obtained and registered final mark in the programme.

The deadline for requesting an extra exam opportunity for a course from semester 2 is August 31. The extra exam opportunities for courses from semester 2 take place in the exam week in period 1 of the following academic year. This deadline therefore only applies if you have completed all other courses, including your thesis!

Deadline for requesting an extra exam opportunity for a course from semester 1 is May 15. The extra exam opportunities for courses from semester 1 take place in the resit week in period 6. This deadline only applies if you have completed all other courses, including your thesis!

Courses that are concluded differently, e.g. a practical skills component or a Bachelor thesis, are excluded from the extra exam arrangement.

Students should apply for extra exam opportunity, only if they completed all other courses including their thesis. The deadline for extra exam requests is 1 July.

If you completed all your courses after 1 July, you may still submit a request. However, it may be possible your request cannot be granted before the new academic year, due to the vacation or busy schedules of Examination board members. Therefore we advise you to re-enrol into your Bachelor programme, just to be safe.

The Examination board will do their best to process your request as soon as possible and you can reschedule your exam with your professor.

If extra exam opportunity requests that do not meet the terms and conditions, they will be denied.

Master

You can apply for extra exam opportunity (see Teaching and Examination Regulations artikel 3.4 lid 4) for your Master if:

  • You participated in (at least one of) the regular examination periods in the designated academic year (unless this was not possible due to extenuating circumstance), and
  • The subject in question is the last course before concluding your Bachelor programme.
  • The subject is concluded with a scheduled written exam, a paper or a take-home exam, and
  • Your next exam opportunity is untimely, leading to a significant and unnecessary study delay, or re-enrolment into the programme.

Hemme Battjes

Students can apply for additional examination opportunity if:

  • The subject in question is the last course before concluding their Bachelor or Master programme.
  • And your next exam opportunity is untimely, leading to a significant and unnecessary study delay.

First or second-year students who need to resit exams will have to wait for the following academic year.

First-year students who missed an exam due to special circumstances can apply for postponement via the Binding Study Report (BSA). Contact your Academic  advisor, if this applies to you.

The Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER) of your programme list the number of examination opportunities per subject and year.
