Specialisation during your master’s programme
Last updated on 4 July 2026

A specialisation - also called track or graduate programme - is a set of courses within your Master’s degree. You need to register for these courses.

Most Master's programmes offer specialisations, also known as track or graduate programmes. Specialisations are a set of courses within your Master’s degree. If you want to follow a specialisation, you need to register first. You can register for a specialisation when you apply for your study programme or via the registration module throughout your course.

Specialisation during your Master’s programme

  • Specialisation registration during course enrolment

If you are asked to indicate a specialisation during enrolment, you are automatically signed on to the specialisation of your choice. However, this does not automatically mean you are signed up for the corresponding courses. Use the Registration module (link) to sign up for your individual courses. Once you are registered, your courses will appear in the ‘preselected courses’ section of the registration module.

Additional entry requirements (may) apply per specialisation. If you wish to apply, your application is first assessed by the admissions committee of your programme. Please visit masters.vu.nl for additional information.

  • Specialisation registration after course enrolment

After enrolment, you can sign up for new or additional specialisations via the ‘minor/specialisation’ section in the registration module. If entry requirements apply, your application will be reviewed by the admissions committee.

When your request is granted, you are registered to the specialisation.
However, this does not automatically mean you are signed up for the corresponding courses. Use the Registration module to sign up for your individual courses. Once you are registered, your courses will appear in the ‘preselected courses’ section of the registration module.

  • Changing specialisations

Do you want to change specialisations during the course of your programme? Submit a change request through the registration module in the ‘minor/specialisation’ section.  The programme's admissions committee always evaluates change requests.

You can sign up for the corresponding courses, once your change request is approved.

  • Multiple specialisations

It is possible to register for multiple specialisations at once. The number of specialisations you can sign up for may vary per programme. Sign up via the registration module in the ‘minor/specialisation’ section.

You can sign up for the corresponding courses, once your request is approved.

Sign up for individual courses

Once registered to a specialisation, you still need to sign up for the corresponding courses. Use the Registration module to sign up for your individual courses. Once you are registered, your courses will appear in the ‘preselected courses’ section of the registration module.

Specialisation on your certificate

In the final phase of your programme, checks are made if students are registered to the correct specialisations. Please make sure you are registered to the right specialisation(s). This ensures that the correct specialisations are noted on your degree certificate.
