Miki SUGIMURA is President of Sophia University in Japan and a Professor of the Faculty of Human Sciences. She serves as the UNESCO Chair on Education for Human Dignity, Peace and Sustainability. She earned her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. She is a Visiting Professor at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), a Research Fellow at the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development, Vice Chair of the Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network in the Asia-Pacific (ProSPER.Net), and a member of the Executive Board of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES).
In 2022, she was appointed to UNESCO’s International Expert Group for the revision of the 1974 Recommendation. She has also served as a member of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO and as President of the Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES). Her research focuses on international higher education, multicultural education, and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
