Puck Bemelmans, 24 years
2nd year PBH and 5th year Medicine
Hi, my name is Puck and I am a 5th-year Medicine student at the University of Amsterdam, as well as a 2nd-year PBH student. I am combining my rounds and scientific internship for almost two years now with PBH courses. PBH as a master’s program provides you with a lot of freedom in arranging the planning and order of the restricted PBH courses, which makes it well possible to combine it with a somewhat rigid program like Medicine. It is still a challenging combination, which requires thorough planning, but which is also giving me new insights and a broader vision to Medicine and health care. The best advice I could give is to take a good look at your planning regarding your rounds and scientific internship.
For example, I did almost all PBH courses in the waiting time before my rounds, which makes it possible for me to focus entirely on my medical master’s now and work a bit on the side. I could combine my scientific internship for Medicine with the practical internship for PBH. This enabled me to finish two large projects for 2 different studies in one term, before starting my rounds. Now I am trying to plan the final stretches, like the Winter School in Oxford and my thesis, in my free weeks between my rounds. This way, I hope to get both my Medicine and PBH diploma at the end of my rounds.
