In collaboration with security agencies such as the police and customs authorities, they developed an innovative approach in which port mariners play a key role in strengthening cooperation between agencies. This has made it easier to detect and combat criminal activity. The research has paved the way for a new project aimed at tackling crime that reaches even further – into space itself, where new threats and security risks are emerging. By 2030, VU Amsterdam researchers will be pioneers in security policy: their insights will be reflected in international treaties. Through collaboration with agencies and technology companies, they will contribute to a just and secure future.
Combating crime
Researchers at VU Amsterdam work together with societal partners to build a just world. Criminologist Yarin Eski, in collaboration with social psychologist Hans Boutellier, mapped the nature and approach of drug-related crime in the Port of Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal area.
