Lecturer in Academic English
Carmen Defty has been working at VU Amsterdam since January 2026. She is originally from South Africa and holds a Master of Arts in Linguistics from Stellenbosch University. She is currently doing her PhD in Linguistics at VU Amsterdam in the field of child language acquisition. As well as an English teacher, she is also a junior lecturer in the Language, Literature and Communication Department. Carmen's favorite part of lecturing is figuring out which way of teaching suits each student and the joy that comes from instilling confidence in her students. Along with teaching and research, Carmen's other passion is reading. She is a certified bookworm and worked as a book reviewer for several South African publications.
