A tool for (dis)connection?

The role of metaphor in misperceptions about science-related societal topics
Metaphors play a paradoxical role in communication about science-related societal topics: they are a helpful explanatory tool on the one hand, and a potential source of misinformation and misperceptions on the other. Yet, little is known about when metaphor-based misperceptions emerge, and what they look like. This project therefore integrates theories and methods related to metaphor from the Humanities and theories and methods about online misinformation and misperceptions from the Social Sciences to investigate when and how metaphors work as a tool for (dis)connection.

Applicants:

  • dr. Gudrun Reijnierse, Department of Language, Literature, and Communication, Faculty of Humanities
  • Ellen Droog, Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social Sciences

In the project, two student research assistants will closely collaborate to investigate (1) which metaphors are used in news messages about science-related topics that impact people’s lives around the globe, such as climate change and artificial intelligence; and (2) how such metaphors play a role in public perceptions of these topics, as expressed on social media. To accurately evaluate to what extent the metaphors contribute to misperceptions about the science-related topics, the RAs will consult scientific experts.

The project provides a unique opportunity for high-potential students to conduct research that is both scientifically as well as societally relevant, and to get a taste of what it is like to work in an interdisciplinary research team.
