A close friendship in Medicine going on for 37 years

Nynke: „Our true story began in 1985, at the start of our Medicine studies at VU Amsterdam."

„A bunch of total strangers got together in mentor group The Unity, and soon more people stuck with them. How young and green we were! And how great was that well-organized introductory week at VU. For we found friendship there, the most important beginning for any student.

During those long studies, we shared all kinds of things. In our self-made year club outside any student association, we experienced together the big and small things: retaking the physiology exam for the umpteenth time, new and broken loves, the 1988 European Soccer Championships, the death of parents, cocktail parties where eggnog was mixed with cola, skiing in Austria, and much more.

Following our move out into the world, the hard core still keeps sharing today. Eight women - two gynecologists, a district nurse, a family doctor, a specialist in geriatrics, a psychiatrist, a youth physician and a thrombosis care doctor - enjoyed a postponed Christmas dinner last month.

We were renamed, however, by the German-speaking husband of one of us. As 'De Maisjes', we still engage in all kinds of activities: chatting afternoons, home dinners, daytrips and vacations in sunny places. And what is more fun than picking up your phone and finding over fifty messages in the WhatsApp group? Who could have imagined that in 1985?

In short, still friends after 37 years. And certainly, as Valentine's Day is described on Wikipedia, the celebration of love and affection. Happy Valentine's Day!”
