Tapping Untapped Potential

This project explores the experiences, challenges, and professional aspirations of people with a refugee or migrant background who are currently working or preparing to work in the Dutch healthcare sector. Through conversations, diary studies, interactive workshops, and co-creation of a graphic story, the project draws attention to their unique contributions and addresses how care organizations can better support and integrate this group.

In a society where migration is often seen through a lens of fear, we face a paradox: many sectors, including Dutch healthcare, are experiencing severe staff shortages, while the potential of refugees and other migrants who are now working or aspiring to work in healthcare cannot be fully realized. Who are these people? What are their challenges, dreams, and experiences? Our project aims to explore the untapped potential of these individuals and understand their perspectives and experiences in the Dutch healthcare sector.

Participants are invited to document their day-to-day experiences through photo, video, text or voice diaries, reflecting on challenges, needs, and positive encounters.

Through this participatory and inclusive design, the project not only gathers valuable data but also creates space for mutual learning and empowerment. A collective graphic story will be co-created to visualize and communicate the findings.
