Personal information

Zerrin Isik (MSc, PhD) is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Isik works as a data scientist in the bioinformatics field to implement new solutions for clinical use. Isik is also involved in the national BioSB community to organize periodic hot topics symposiums related to bioinformatics.

Research

Isik’s research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence, multi-modal data analysis, and precision medicine. Currently, her work centers on analyzing microbiome data alongside clinical parameters using AI models to uncover novel links between mental health and dietary nutrients. Isik is known for developing specialized drug repositioning software to accelerate cancer research, as well as engineering deep neural networks that utilize multi-modal brain imaging (MRI and PET scans) to improve the diagnostic accuracy of dementia subtypes. Across all projects, the ultimate objective is to translate complex computational models into effective clinical tools for early diagnosis and personalized treatment.

Teaching

Isik contributes to educational programs in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Master's and AI Bachelor's programs at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Key teaching subjects include machine learning and algorithm development in bioinformatics. In addition, Isik supervises bachelor’s theses and master’s internship projects.
