Xiaoran Li

External PhD Candidate, Faculty of Science, Environmental Policy Analysis

Personal information

Xiaoran Li is a PhD student in the department of Environmental Policy Analysis of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

She earned her Master’s degree from Renmin University of China (RUC) and majored in Environmental Policy and Management in the School of Environment and Natural Resources. Her Master’s thesis addressed the innovative actors and mechanisms of environmental governance in rural China. This research was funded by the collaborative project ‘Sustainable Resource Management for Adequate and Safe Food Provision (SURE+)’ between the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST).

For the PhD project, she wants to focus on studying China’s new role in governing global climate change, especially its multi-level climate governance situated at different policy levels. She aims to figure out to what extent the coherence between various policy levels affects the effectiveness of China’s climate governance from home and abroad.

Besides the academic experience, she also did some internships in the related field. In 2015, she worked for UNDP China at the Energy and Environment Team under the ‘Strengthening the Effectiveness of the Protected Area System, China to Conserve Globally Important Biodiversity’ Program. In 2018, she worked for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH China under the ‘Sino-German Energy Partnership’ Project, which facilitates the dialogue on energy efficiency between the German and Chinese government.
