Full Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Political Science and Public Administration

Full Professor, Research Programmes - Social Sciences, New Public Governance (NPG)

Personal information

Willem Trommel (1959) is a sociologist with a special focus on public policy and governance. In 1995 he received his PhD from Leyden University. He published widely on welfare state reform, including the trend towards local welfare, and on the modernization of public governance systems. In 2009 he developed his argument on neoliberal ('greedy') governance. Currently he is working on a research line on artificial intelligence and the state ('governing the algorithmic universe').

Research

Prof Willem Trommel is involved in four distinct lines of research:

* The 'localization of welfare' : do we observe  such a trend, what does it look like, and how can we explain it from the perspective of a globalizing society?

* 'Beyond neoliberal governance': to what extent do we witness the emergence of post-neoliberal governance practices ('crafting communities'), how do they function and how can we explain succes and failure?

* 'Critical and public public administration': are we in need of more critical and engaged paradigms in public administration, and how can these be developed?

* 'Governing the Algorithmic Universe': Do we succeed in governing the new social (moral, legal, economic, cultural) issues that are produced by a tech-society, and to what extent is the use of artificial intelligence in public governance ('algogovernance') a tool or rather a threat to democratic decision making?

All research is devloped in teams, involving PhD students.

Education

Prof Trommel is currently active in teaching a bachelor course public management, a master course on policy and society, a PhD course on social science classics, and thesis supervision. Next to that he is a regular guest speaker and lecturer.
