Vita Bakker, MSc


External PhD Candidate, Faculty of Science, Environmental Geography

Personal information

Vita Bakker is a researcher and PhD Candidate at the Environmental Geography group at IVM. She has a deep fascination for the relationship between people and cities and the environment.

Vita has a scientific and practical background in urban and regional planning (MSc) and environmental and infrastructure planning (BSc). In her master thesis, she addressed the potential of non-motorized transportation for food accessibility for slum dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya. After graduating, she did an internship at UN-Habitat in Beirut, Lebanon. Where after she worked for the City of Rotterdam, Netherlands, for two years. These experiences are valuable for a better understanding of what is needed for more sustainable urbanization: a better integration of science and practice.

With her research in sustainable human settlement, she aims to contribute to a better understanding of de change trajectories of urban landscapes on different scales. In order to manage urban development in a more sustainable and less impactful way.

2017: MSc Urban and Regional Planning, University of Amsterdam (Cum Laude).

2015: Pre-masters, Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences, with specialization in Urban Design and Planning, Eindhoven Technical University.

2014: BSc, Environmental and Infrastructure Planning.

2013: Minor, Cultuur en Ruimte (Culture and Place), University of Groningen.
