Personal information

Dr. Valérie Duplat is Associate Professor of Strategy at the School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Prior to joining VU Amsterdam, she was a faculty member at EDHEC Business School (France). She earned her PhD in Strategic Management from the Louvain School of Management (Belgium), where her dissertation examined the governance of inter-organizational partnerships and technological networks.

Throughout her academic career, she has held visiting positions at leading international institutions, including the University of Michigan, Purdue University (Krannert School of Management), the University of Colorado Boulder (Leeds School of Business), Maastricht University, ESCP Business School, and the Louvain School of Management. She was awarded the prestigious FNEGE Junior Faculty Award in recognition of her research potential.

She is also Guest Editor of the Global Strategy Journal Special Issue on Globalizing Intelligence: Orchestrating Artificial Intelligence for Global Advantage.

Research

Valérie's research lies at the intersection of strategic management, international business, and organization theory. Her work examines how firms organize, govern, and adapt their inter-organizational relationships in increasingly uncertain global environments. More recently, her research has expanded to investigate how geopolitical tensions, institutions, and artificial intelligence reshape the strategies and innovation of multinational enterprises.

Her research spans three complementary streams:

  • governance, conflict management, and collaboration in inter-organizational relationships;
  • globalization, regionalization, and geopolitical strategy of multinational enterprises;
  • artificial intelligence, innovation, and global strategy.

Her research has been published in Research Policy, Human Relations, Global Strategy Journal, Long Range Planning, International Journal of Management Reviews, International Journal of Information Management, Small Business Economics, and European Management Journal.

Beyond her research, Valérie actively contributes to the international strategy and international business community. She co-founded and co-organizes the annual Globalization Day conference series, an international research forum jointly organized by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, ESCP Business School, and Vlerick Business School. The event brings together leading scholars from around the world to discuss emerging challenges in globalization, geopolitics, innovation, and multinational enterprise strategy. She also organizes professional development workshops and scholarly panels at leading international conferences, including the Academy of Management, the International Business Academy, and the European International Business Academy.

Valérie is an active member of the VU Knowledge Hub for Ecosystems and the VU Knowledge Hub for Global Business Development.

She currently supervises several PhD candidates at VU Amsterdam and ESCP Business School.
