T.F.L. Roedema conducts her Ph.D. research in Science Communication at the Athena Institute (science & society) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Currently, she is part of the COALESCE project, a EU-funded project that builds the European Competence Center for science communication; and STRAATWIJS, that brings together science and society trough co-creation of art, and facilitate dialogue about complex societal problems. Her research interests lie in science communication, public engagement with science, science and technology studies, transdisciplinary research and action-based research.
My passion lies in exploring the dynamics of current public discussions on contested fields of science. How do citizens make sense of science in uncertain times; when discussions online are hardened and polarized; and when science cannot always provide univocal answers to complex, ambiguous questions and dilemmas? And how should science communicators respond? I explored these questions in my PhD, as part of the European-funded RETHINK project, in a transformative learning process. In my work, I enjoye working together with science communicators, science museums, SSH scholars, communicating scientists, journalists, and citizens, to create meaningful, inclusive, open and reflective public dialogues on science.
