Personal information

Sven Zebel is een sociaal en forensisch psycholoog en is sinds 2021 als bijzonder hoogleraar mediation verbonden aan de vakgroep privaatrecht van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Daarnaast werkt hij als universitair hoofddocent bij de vakgroep Psychologie van Conflict, Risico en Veiligheid aan de Universiteit Twente. Zijn interesse en ervaring betreffen de psychologische reacties van burgers op conflicten en van slachtoffers en daders op misdrijven. Daarbij onderzoekt hij de impact van (juridische en niet-juridische) interventies die beogen te herstellen, conflicten op te lossen en/of recidive te verkleinen (e.g. mediation en herstelbemiddeling, strafrechtelijke sancties).

In zijn promotie- en postdoc periode aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (2000-2009) onderzocht en publiceerde hij over de psychologische mechanismen en emoties bij slachtoffers (angst, woede, minachting) en bij daders (schuld, schaamte, woede, compassie) van wangedrag en criminaliteit.

Tijdens en na deze periode werkte hij ook enige tijd als beleidsonderzoeker bij Slachtoffer in Beeld en Slachtofferhulp Nederland (2008-2010), en als onderzoeker bij de recidivemonitor van het WODC (2010-2011), alvorens hij vanaf 2011 bij de Universiteit Twente ging werken.
